What is Chiropractic

Chiropractors are health care professionals trained to diagnose, treat, manage and prevent disorders of the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, and muscles), as well as the effects these disorders can have on the nervous system and general health.

They potentially treat any condition related to any joint in the human body. They focus on all joints, including those of the spine, as well as the upper and lower limbs. They utilise careful and gentle manipulation of the body's joints in order to establish optimal alignment and in so doing reduce pain for patients.

Chiropractors utilise non-invasive treatment procedures and promote healthy living, this includes regular exercise, proper diets and stress reduction.

In the situation where a chiropractor finds that surgery or medication is indicated, the patient will be referred to a medical practitioner.

Your first chiropractic consultation

Your first consultation will begin with a complete health history, this includes questions such as what type of pain you have, where the pain is, how did it start, your past health history, family history, etc.

This will be followed by a complete physical exam in order to assess your condition. It will include assessing your posture, testing your range of motion, carrying out neurological and orthopaedic tests.

Your health history and the physical exam performed will assist your chiropractor with determining the possible cause of the problem, if your case can be treated with chiropractic care and what the best treatment plan might be.

X-rays or laboratory tests may be required, however, this is not always necessary and your chiropractor will determine if such tests are required.

If your chiropractor determines that chiropractic care is not the best course of treatment for your case, you may be referred to another health care specialist for further evaluation or treatment.
